This course will consider the histories and politics of American Studio Craft as an idea and discipline, starting with the emergence of craft as an independent concept in the early 20th century during the industrial revolution and Arts and Crafts movement continuing through to its bearing on DIY, craftivism, and contemporary making practices. By focusing on concepts like the invention of craft, skill, material, and process this course will explore what it means to make things and how we can interpret objects to reveal the values of society.
