Students develop a knowledge base and foundational skills to work with children who have diverse learning needs within a mainstream educational setting. A continuum of diverse needs is addressed, with emphasis on exceptionalities of high incidence, the Academically and Intellectually Gifted, and English Language Learners. Strategies and interventions to accommodate and adapt the learning environment to meet learning needs is covered. Historic, contemporary, and legal issues are discussed. In addition, students gain knowledge and experience in collaboration with families, school personnel and community service providers. This class involves a field component in which students observe and engage with teachers and service providers who work with individuals with diverse learning needs and with teachers and service providers.
