This course introduces intermediate and advanced music students to the world of klezmer: Jewish folk music which originated in Eastern Europe and developed across the Jewish diaspora worldwide. This course explores the history, elements, and ornamentation of klezmer music, as well as seminal recordings in the genre, focusing on klezmer music in America. Using both sheet music and aural skills, students in the ensemble arrange the repertoire for a variety of instruments and perform a concert at the end of the semester. This course satisfies the ensemble requirement for music majors and minors. Repeatable for a maximum of 8 credits.
