This course assists students in developing skills necessary to establish and build helping relationships. Skills covered include both verbal and non-verbal communication. Active listening and empathetic communication are emphasized. This course creates a foundation for further course work in social work practice or other disciplines that use primarily verbal communication to enhance problem solving. Through experiential learning that involves direct interaction with others and reflection on their experience, students examine their interest in the social work profession and other helping roles.
