In this course, students learn the basics of Appalachian flatfooting and clogging, the traditional step dances of the Appalachian region. They also learn about the traditions of team clogging and have the opportunity to create a clogging group for performance. Through assigned readings, documentary videos, and possible visits to regional dance venues, students gain an understanding of the roots and history of these traditional dance forms and their role in the Appalachian community, past and present. Although prior dance knowledge is welcome, it is not a prerequisite for the course.
