This course is a history of land and people in the area now known as the United States. We will discuss our topic across time, but will take a strong emphasis on modern history. When possible, we will talk about how various course themes pertain to our immediate surroundings in Appalachia. The overall class emphasis will be on the changes in vegetation and landscape that have resulted from human use and management. Agriculture, water use, logging, conservation movements, national forests and parks, forestry and natural resource professions, and various forms of the environmental movement will all be covered through a sustained and focused seminar with occasional short lectures.
