This course examines the diverse attitudes and practices associated with death and dying across cultures. Topics include the aging process, the nuanced experiences of dying, mortuary rituals such as funerals and burials, and post-death experiences in which the dead continue to inform the lives of the living. The course also examines the relationship between the deceased, material artifacts, and the physical environment and discusses contemporary critiques of the social, economic, and environmental impacts of death.This includes an exploration of social movements like the Death Positive movement and other evolving societal attitudes towards mortality.
