Public programming is crucial to the experience of art—from educational and participatory activities, such as artist talks, concert and theater performances, film screenings, readings, and workshops, to outreach initiatives in schools, communities, and beyond. In this project-based course, students discover multidimensional ways to engage diverse audiences, facilitate community-building, and create memorable experiences as they plan and execute arts programming. Topics vary according to the specific programming needs each semester but may include site preparation, advertising, grant-writing, budgeting, creating authentically-inclusive programming, coordinating with organizations that serve different demographic communities, and creating an organizational infrastructure that promotes equity and diversity.
