This studio course is an introduction to hand papermaking using materials ranging from bark fibers, to partially processed plant fibers, to fully processed cotton rag. Students learn how to prepare and beat fibers as well as form, dry, and finish sheets. Along with learning the history and chemistry behind hand paper making, they gain control over several qualities of paper including color, surface, strength, and size/shape. Students should expect and plan to spend additional time working on their projects each week outside of scheduled class time. Course Fee.
