I welcome you all to the Painting Studio.

The primary focus of this course is to learn a variety of techniques and concepts in contemporary painting…and then riff on those techniques to make them your own.

At the beginning of the course, we’ll fill your toolkit: you’ll practice color theory, mixing paint, mark-making, and design. You’ll explore materials including but not limited to acrylic paint, gouache, paint sticks, and mixed media (such as thread, fabric and paper) in an effort to communicate your ideas with clarity and effectiveness. Building upon these foundational skills, you’ll pursue subject matter that is meaningful to you while simultaneously expanding upon the definition of “painting.” How? You will paint often! On a weekly basis, you’ll discuss your in-process paintings with peers, you’ll research the artwork of contemporary artists, visit online art exhibitions as is relevant, and attend guest-artist demonstrations and/or lectures.

Grades will be determined by an accumulation of points on projects, studio stewardship, participation in exhibitions, the professional quality of your art documentation, your playful experimentation and rigorous research with materials, your individual growth through the semester, and your consistent, thoughtful, active participation in our studio community.
