This course is designed to help us better understand how the world operates today. We will think about
the development of European Empire globally, and how this impacts/impacted the peoples living in
Europe and beyond. We will learn about why and how the industrial revolution and capitalism
fundamentally altered the human experience. Some topics we will explore include: revolutionary and
radical thought, colonialism in Africa, Modern art and literature, the Russian
Revolution, WWI, the Spanish Civil War, WWII, the rise of fascism, the holocaust, post-colonial
movements, and the current immigration crisis in Europe. We will ask and answer big questions using
documentaries, literature, art, government documents, oral history, and different scholarly writings.
There is no single textbook, no “quizzes” or “tests,” and students can be creative with their final project.
