This course combines introductory studies in human anatomy with somatics and expressive art in order to explore embodiment, awareness, and expression in our human form. We will study the movement repertoire and anatomy of different regions of the human body, while also exploring the symbolic themes and metaphors that live within our creative, expressive body systems. The course will include somatic presencing practices, lessons on anatomical form and function, embodied anatomy practices, improvisational movement, drawing, creative writing, and sharing and witnessing practices. We will draw on our unique experiences as individuals in our bodies, as well as our shared and collective experiences. We will learn methods for self-awareness, communication techniques, and the art of witnessing and reflecting others. This course is designed for those interested in the ways in which both the literal and symbolic elements of being human are dynamically alive within our bodies. We will utilize the artistic processes to explore and deepen our relationship to psychological life, to social issues, and to creativity. We will move beyond learning about our human bodies from 2-dimensional textbooks and bring it to life from within our own bodies and expressive selves. All bodies and abilities are welcome! No previous art or dance experience is necessary.
