When does something become "waste," and who decides? In this class, we'll explore wide-ranging perspectives on the term "waste" from poets, fiction writers, artists, scholars, and our immediate communities by partnering with a local organization. Students will think critically about topics including cleanliness and disgust, consume-and-dispose culture, and waste work, paying special attention to how waste has been aligned with and reclaimed by marginalized voices. Throughout the semester, students will produce personal narratives, short essays, and creative projects while unpacking their own relationships to and definitions of waste.
