This course examines principles and practices for integrating human systems with natural processes to create more resilient and sustainable places. Topics include permaculture design, use of local natural resources in construction, fundamentals of environmental engineering with nature, nature-based solutions, ecological sanitation systems, and biophilic design. Emphasis is placed on case studies and applied learning, providing students with a foundation to evaluate ecological design strategies and envision sustainable applications in diverse contexts. Topics courses are 2 or 4 credit, in-depth, thematic courses that may be repeated for credit under a different theme. May be repeated up to three times for a maximum of 8 credits. Prerequisite: ENS 1200 Everybody’s Environment! People, Place, and Planet.
