Understanding Power & Control: Healthy Relationships and the Impact of Intimate Partner Violence on Individuals, Families & Communities: In this course, students will learn to define Intimate partner violence and identify power and control tactics used by abusive partners. We will learn about the history of the IPV/DV movement, including the origin of the power and control wheel, as well as discuss support for those impacted by abuse. This includes those who identify as victims as well as individuals who have used power and control behaviors. We will engage in both large group and small group discussions, exploring the impact of abuse from a trauma-informed lens as well as through the understanding of structural racism, misogyny, and capitalism, and how IPV impacts different communities. Students will explore the dynamics of healthy relationships, including polyamory and monogamy. The course will include mandatory readings, mixed media, and utilize current events. Additionally, students will engage in developing and facilitating on-campus education and outreach. Topics courses are 2 or 4 credit, in-depth, thematic courses that may be repeated for credit under a different theme. May be repeated up to two times for a maximum of 12 credits.
