This course gives students real, hands-on archaeological field experience excavating at Boyd Cabin (Sandy Mush, Buncombe County), a 19th and 20th-century Freedman's homestead. Students will learn how to place units, excavate in levels, and process and analyze material remains. From a broader theoretical perspective, students will engage in discussions about what it means to do archaeology at an African American site, how Black Feminist perspectives can assist in interpretation of findings, and the importance of providing a new data source (archaeological materials) to counter or challenge traditional historical/documentary narratives.
